Last winter, I decided it was time for a new mattress (and a new bed!). As the eco-conscious person I am, I researched organic mattresses, and confirmed that’s what I wanted. I had heard about mattresses made by Avocado from ads in Dwell magazine, and then after some online searches, my Instagram feed, of course, filled with Avocado’s sexy advertisements. I was sold.

After six months with my organic mattress, I can report that I love it! I opted for the “Avocado Green Mattress” made from organic latex, wool, and cotton (for vegans, there is a wool-free option!). True to their product statements, I find the mattress is noticeably warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer. It also doesn’t have that “chemically” odor and feel that so many mattresses made with synthetic materials have. And, most importantly, it’s comfortable!

As a bonus, Avocado makes their mattresses in a factory in Los Angeles (from domestic and imported materials). Even better, the company is a fellow member of 1% For The Planet. I also wanted a new bed to change the vibe of the room. Style, of course, weighed heavily on my decision, but so did the bed’s lifecycle. I opted for Room and Board’s steel “Parsons Bed” in slate. I like that steel is a simple, authentic material, and that it can be easily recycled/repurposed when the bed is no longer wanted or is useful. Aesthetically, the steel is “heavy, but cool” (I love that contrast!) and the slate color is beautiful with white sheets…and oranges and lighter-hued blues. Again, nice contrast!
